DIA Pursues a Green Component to Foster Climate Action Within the Youth of Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago

In recent years, people have commented about how temperatures and seasons seem to be off. These weather changes and their effects on our daily lives show us that we must take action to contribute to the prevention of climate change from wherever we are: be it our home, our school, our business or social venture, or any other. It tells us that if we continue doing more of the same, extreme temperatures, sea levels, food and water insecurity, and resource scarcity will continue to increase and affect millions worldwide. Capacity-building on adaptation and mitigation to climate change must be a priority of policymakers and a fundamental factor for future generations to be prepared to address the consequences of this phenomenon.

In this sense, The Trust for the Americas, a regional non-profit organization affiliated with the Organization of American States (OAS), contemplates green components in its programs and projects. This year, we partnered with the Capacity-Building Program on Climate Action and Leadership for Development developed by the Water Program of the Department of Sustainable Development of the Executive Secretariat for Integral Development (SEDI-DSD) of the General Secretariat of OAS and the Climate Change and Sustainability Division of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Under this partnership, our DIA Program will provide 80 scholarships for youth in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago to participate and be leaders in DIA4Climate.com. This opportunity will help curious young minds develop skills to boost their impact as agents of change in LAC\’s environmental and climate sector. From learning about crucial topics such as climate finance, nature-based solutions (NBS), and sustainable infrastructure to incorporating a human rights approach and integrating the goals of the instruments of the sustainable development macro-regime, this opportunity will provide them with the right skills at the right moment.

At The Trust for the Americas, we are thrilled to know that we are continuing to bridge gaps in our hemisphere, but more so, we are contributing to restoring our planet. In this way, we promote the generation of livelihood opportunities and sources of work that improve the quality of life of communities and strengthen actions to forge a better future in which the health of our planet is an essential pillar.
